Having been there several times before, I can attest to the fact that it’s worth the drive.
The Salt Flats can be visited year-round, but summer is the best time to get the best weather conditions. However, keep in mind that it’s always a gamble going out there, so make sure to check the weather beforehand. It’s always best to plan your visit around the sunrise or sunset hours, which typically provide the best light for photography. The golden hour, 1-2 hours before sunset and 1 hour after sunrise, offers a magical glow to the already stunning surroundings.
When visiting the Bonneville Salt Flats, park at the rest stop heading westbound towards Wendover. You can either drive or walk onto the salt flats. Walking on the salt flats is a unique experience that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscape.
Utah is known for its unpredictable weather, and the Bonneville Salt Flats is no exception. The area is prone to sudden thunderstorms, so it’s crucial to keep an eye on the weather forecast and prepare accordingly. It’s also essential to bring sunscreen, water, and snacks as there aren’t many facilities nearby. At the rest stop there is a bathroom that is… functional.
When leaving, continue heading west until you reach an area where you can turn around safely. The drive from Salt Lake City takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, making it an excellent day trip for those living in the area.
