Utah State Capitol Blossoms – What to know – from a Utah Family Photographer – Alice Photo co

As the “best photographer in Utah” I am so excited about the upcoming blossom season here in Utah! It is still just the beginning of winter but I can’t help but look forward to this spring photography season. If you’ve been searching for a luxury family photographer in Utah you’ve come to the right place. Family photos at the Utah State Capitol during the blooming blossoms is a highlight for all. BUT that means that it can be pretty tricky to take photos there. Keeping reading for what to know about the blossoms and get my best tips to get the best out of your session there.

It seems like you’re thinking about getting some new family photos at this location. Just know that the best amount of people is anything under 10. The rows of flowers and the popularity of this location isn’t very ideal for an extended family session.

If you’re a senior this year it would make an ideal location and time for senior photos! There IS a public bathroom inside the capitol that you can use to change outfits. But I always tell my clients to try and wear clothes underneath their outfits that they don’t mind changing in front of people so we can maximize our time togehter.

Kids will absolutely love this location for it’s pathways lined with blossoms, hills for running and getting wiggles out and walking along the walls next to the grass.

Timing these blossoms just right can be pretty tricky. Every year you’ve got a week maybe two to take advantage of this spriny splendor. (and yes that was me saying springy splendor and not chat gpt coming up with that corny line) No one really knows when exactly the cherry blossoms will be at peak because it all depends on the weather just a week or so before they bloom. My best guess is the 2nd or 3rd week in April. But if it’s warmer earlier than usual it could be the 1st week in April.

If you’re planning on having your session there on the weekend then be warned it can be extremely crowded. Saturdays are the worst day but the mornings aren’t as swamped as the evening. Weekday evenings are the best for lighting even Sunday evening wasn’t too bad. Sunset is around 8 PM in April so a session that starts at 6-7PM should be perfect timing for great light.

Finding a great spot to start taking family or senior photos can be tricky too. I’ll say this now, just be prepared to walk. Everyone will camp out right in the middle. After you’ve found a place to park choose either side to walk and head towards the back of the capitol. There’s so much less traffic in these areas which is ideal to make the photos look like we had the place to ourselves.

Make sure you come with a lot of patience. This is the main reason I won’t be doing mini sessions at this location. And if you know me you know mini sessions are my absolute favorite. But there is no way I’d be able to serve you well in that short amount of time. There are people walking around all the time and we have to stop and wait for people to walk by while I hurry and take a bunch of photos. So instead I offer a sweet deal on my full sessions!
