Alright, so you’ve got your family photoshoot all set up, but now the big question looms: what the heck are you all going to wear? Seriously, finding perfectly curated outfits that are pinterest worthy feels like trying to get the moon with a bottle of ketchup impossible right? Trust me, I’ve been there, spending countless hours scouring the internet for the ideal ensemble every time my own fam plans a photoshoot. And honestly even more time searching for coordinated outfits to make my clients lives a little easier!
And then maybe you find some great inspiration but the cost of buying everyone new outfits is just insane and you begin to feel like this is all a big mistake… Well take a breath… ahhhh that’s better.
You’ve found this post and hopefully these tips and my reassurance that it’s OK for you to choose outfits that you’ve already got in your closet is totally FINE!! I’ve been a family photographer in Utah for years and I’ve seen all the outfits. One thing that stands out is the people that feel comfortable in what they are wearing end up smiling and having more fun during there family photography session than the people that have outfits that make them totally uncomfortable.
Now, let’s dive into some killer tips for nailing your family photo looks:
First up, Mom, it’s your time to shine! In most cases you are the one organizing, pushing, for these family pictures so I think you deserve a little treat. Start with what YOU’D like to wear and build a color palette around your outfit. Whether it’s a flowy floral number or a stunning white maxi, own it, and let that piece set the tone for the whole fam’s style.
Next, let’s talk coordination. Pick a color palette and roll with it. You want everyone to vibe together without looking like clones. Mix it up with different shades and textures that complement each other like a dream. I’d say stick with 1-2 main colors and 1-3 neutral colors. And please DON’T over think the color thing. Just make sure if everyone is in blues, tans, white, olive someone isn’t showing up in a bright red shirt…
Oh, and a little PSA: steer clear of loud logos or crazy graphics. We want the focus to be on your beautiful faces, not some random brand plastered across your chest, right?
Layer’s always create a dynamic feel or in other words that “pinterest” vibe. I’m talking open shirts, jackets, sweaters, overalls, jumpsuit, etc. Don’t forget hats, necklaces, hair bows, bow ties, ties, etc. All of these extra small details create that perfect cohesive look you’re wanting to get.
Now because it’s summer you may be thinking, “Alice, it’ll be 80-90 degrees outside! Who wants to wear a jacket??” And you’re right! If jacket’s aren’t your style and you want more comfort than style let’s go for wearing tshirts under open button up shirt, skirts with a top, etc.
Lastly, think about the vibe you want to capture. Are you a casual family that’s laid back? Fancy with flowy dresses, maybe a little edgy and everyone is in a different colored sweat suit! Stay true to who your family is and don’t worry so much about trying to change who everyone is.
So there you have it, fam! With these tips in your back pocket, you’ll be rocking those family photos like nobody’s business. Let’s make some magic together! 📸✨
