Every year, Utah’s blossom season feels like a little bit of magic after a long winter. As a Utah family and senior photographer, it’s one of the most requested locations I photograph — and for good reason. The Utah State Capitol blossoms create some of the most beautiful spring photos in Salt Lake City.
If you’ve been searching for the best locations for spring photos in Utah, or wondering whether Photos at Utah State Capitol blossoms are worth it for your family or senior session, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know — including timing, crowds, and insider tips to make your session stress-free and beautiful.

The Utah State Capitol grounds transform into rows of soft pink and white blossoms every spring. The tree-lined walkways, wide grassy areas, and elegant architecture create a dreamy backdrop that photographs beautifully.
This location works especially well for:
The variety of scenery allows us to capture both posed and candid moments while keeping your gallery diverse and visually interesting.

✔ Families
Small to medium-sized families photograph best here. I typically recommend groups under 10 people. Because the blossom pathways are narrow and this is a very popular public location, extended family sessions can be challenging.
The good news? Kids usually LOVE this location. There are hills to run on, paved walkways, and plenty of space for movement, which helps keep sessions relaxed and fun.
The blossoms make an incredible senior photo backdrop. The variety of textures and colors pairs beautifully with multiple outfits and creates timeless, elegant portraits.
There is a public restroom inside the Capitol building, which makes outfit changes easier. I always recommend wearing something comfortable underneath your outfits so we can change quickly and maximize shooting time.

Timing blossom sessions is the trickiest part because the bloom window is short and varies each year depending on weather. THIS YEAR 2026 I predict that they blooms will be early since our winter has been so mild. Check out the state capitol’s Instagram page for all the latest updates on how the blooms are doing this year.
Typically, blossoms peak:
👉 Early to mid-April
👉 Sometimes late March if spring arrives early
👉 Occasionally mid to late April during cooler years
The peak bloom usually lasts about 7–14 days, which is why booking early and staying flexible with dates is important.

Lighting is everything when it comes to creating soft, glowing spring portraits.
Sunset in April is usually around 8:00 PM, which means sessions starting between 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM often provide the dreamiest light.

The Utah State Capitol blossoms draw huge crowds every spring, and that popularity is part of what makes the location so magical. It also means planning ahead makes a big difference in how your photos turn out — especially on weekends when visitor traffic peaks.
Over the years, I’ve learned exactly how to navigate this location to create images that still feel calm, beautiful, and personal. One of the biggest things I encourage my clients to expect is a little walking. Most visitors gather in the main central pathways, which can feel busy and overwhelming for photos. Instead, I guide my clients toward the outer edges and back areas of the Capitol grounds. These spots often feel quieter and give us more flexibility to create natural, intimate moments.
If your schedule allows, I also recommend avoiding Saturdays. Weekdays or Sunday evenings usually provide a much smoother experience and more breathing room during your session. Or if you’re up for early morning the crowds are usually non existent and you get the place to yourself. Choosing the right timing and location helps us capture images that feel peaceful and romantic — like you had the blossoms completely to yourself.

If you know me, you know I LOVE mini sessions. However, this location is one of the rare places where I do not offer them.
The heavy foot traffic means we often pause while people walk through the background. Full sessions give us the flexibility to:
To make blossom sessions more accessible, I typically offer limited seasonal session promotions twice per year.
Soft spring tones photograph beautifully against the blossoms. I recommend:
Avoid heavy dark colors or neon tones, which can compete with the natural beauty of the blossoms.

Blossom sessions create timeless photos that feel bright, joyful, and full of movement. They naturally encourage interaction, which helps produce genuine smiles and candid moments.
Many of my clients choose this location because it feels:
