Summer gives us the highest likelihood of dry, solid salt surfaces, which are ideal for walking, posing, and capturing clean white backgrounds. That said, weather at the Salt Flats can change quickly, and wind storms can appear without much warning. I always monitor forecasts closely before heading out to help ensure the best possible experience for my clients.

The Exact Timing That Creates the Best Salt Flats Photos

Lighting is everything at this location.

While golden hour usually refers to the hour before sunset, I’ve found that the absolute sweet spot at the Bonneville Salt Flats happens about 15 minutes before sunset. This is when the light softens, shadows stretch beautifully, and the salt begins reflecting warm tones that create that iconic glowing look.

Because the drive out to the flats is long, sessions are carefully timed to make sure we arrive early enough to prepare but still shoot during the best lighting window.

Where to Park and How to Access the Salt Flats

The most reliable access point is the rest stop located along Interstate 80 heading West toward Wendover. Park at the Salt Flats Rest Area Westbound. From there, you can walk onto the flats depending on conditions. They’ve created a barricade so you can no longer drive onto the flats at this location.

One extremely important tip: do not miss the rest stop exit.

If you drive past it, it can take over an hour to legally turn around. I always provide detailed driving directions for my clients so they arrive smoothly and stress-free.

What It Actually Feels Like to Walk on the Salt Flats

Many people assume the Salt Flats will ruin shoes or clothing, but the surface is surprisingly dry and firm when conditions are right. The salt usually does not stick heavily to clothing or shoes, and cleanup is typically very easy.

Why I Only Offer Salt Flats Mini Sessions Once Per Year

The Bonneville Salt Flats are located about 1.5 to 2 hours from Salt Lake County and Utah County. Because of the distance, travel sessions typically include a higher travel fee for private bookings.

However, once a year I offer limited mini sessions at the Salt Flats. These allow clients to experience this incredible location without paying full travel costs or full session pricing. It’s one of my favorite events of the year because it makes this bucket-list photography location more accessible to families and small businesses.

How to Prepare for a Salt Flats Photography Session

Because the Salt Flats are remote, preparation makes a huge difference in the experience.

Bring water, snacks, and sunscreen since there are limited amenities nearby. The rest stop does provide a basic restroom, but I always recommend arriving fully ready for your session.
