Oh Hey fellow Utahn and fall enthusiast đ Fall is the most popular time for family photos and with good reason! Fall has taken on a life of it’s own from pumpkin spice everything to cozy sweaters to fall vibe Pinterest boards! Fall family photos are at everyone’s mind as the thing to tick off your fall bucket list. Whether youâre a seasoned pro or new to the family photo game, Iâm here to share my expert tips on preparing for your session, choosing the perfect locations, and ensuring everyone is comfortable and happy.
First things firstâwhy fall? Fall in Utah is absolutely breathtaking. The canyons transform into a symphony of reds, oranges, and yellows, providing a stunning backdrop that only lasts for a couple of weeks! Plus, the cooler weather means you can wear those cute sweaters and jackets without melting under the summer sun.
Utah is blessed with countless picturesque spots, but a few of my all-time favorites include Millcreek Canyon and Jolleyâs Ranch. Millcreek Canyon, a short drive from Salt Lake City, offers a mix of dense forests, board walks, leaf strewn walking paths with adorable wooden fences and creeks! The fall colors here are second to none, and the variety of landscapes provides endless possibilities for beautiful photos. Jolleyâs Ranch, located in Hobble Creek Canyon, is perfect for those who love a mix of wooded areas and wide-open spaces. The golden aspen trees here make for stunning photographs, especially when the sun peeks through the branches. Both of these locations offer plenty of space for kids to explore and play, which brings out the most natural smiles and candid moments.
Choosing what to wear can be one of the trickiest parts of preparing for a family photo session, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Layers are your friend. Utah’s fall weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. Think jackets, cardigans, and vests. Not only do layers keep you warm, but they also add dimension and interest to your photos. Solid colors and small patterns tend to photograph best. Solid colors keep the focus on your faces, while small patterns add a touch of personality without overwhelming the image. Earth tones like mustard, burgundy, navy, and forest green complement the fall scenery beautifully. Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit. Instead, aim for a coordinated look with complementary colors and styles. This creates a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy.
Fall sessions are some of my favorites, but the unpredictable weather can sometimes throw a wrench in the plans. Hereâs how to ensure everything goes smoothly: Keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session. If it looks like rain, donât panic! Some of my most magical photos have been taken in the rain. Bring umbrellas and rain boots for a fun, whimsical touch. Little ones can get chilly quickly, so bring along coats and blankets that can be taken on and off as needed. This way, they stay warm between shots without bulky jackets in every photo. Hungry kids are cranky kids. Pack some easy-to-eat snacks and perhaps a favorite toy to keep them entertained between shots. Happy kids make for happy photos.
To get the most out of your session, here are a few more expert tips. I love the light 1-2 hours after sunrise and 1-2 hours before sunset. It’s around daylight savings time so that time of day is still pretty early. Donât worry too much about everyone looking perfect. Some of the best moments are the unplanned onesâlike a spontaneous hug or a shared laugh. As a professional, I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to get everyone looking their best. Trust me to guide you through poses and prompts that feel natural and fun.
I hope these tips inspire you to get out there and capture some beautiful fall memories with your family. Family photos are more than just pictures; theyâre a way to freeze a moment in time and create lasting memories. So whether you decide to book a session with me or venture out on your own, remember to have fun and enjoy the process.
And if you do decide to book a session, I canât wait to work with you and your wonderful family. Letâs make this fall unforgettable with photos that youâll cherish for years to come. đđ¸
