It’s officially winter here in Utah (ok it’s still fall but I’m freezing and that means its time to bundle up for your family photos this winter!) Finding outfit inspiration for family photos in the winter can be tricky so I thought I’d share a few tips and inspiration to keeping you warm and stylish for your family photography session this winter. As a family photographer in Utah I have extensive experience getting family photos in the bitter cold. Whether you’re coming from Utah County or Salt Lake county or anywhere else in the country that has cold weather I hope seeing outfits from past families that absolutely nailed it will help you.
Just remember that just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you can’t wear those fancy dresses. OR that you even need to dress up for family photos! Winter means looking cute and cozy! Embrace that fact and you will shine for your family session this winter. Just keep reading and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Let’s start off with some good old fashion winter outfit inspiration for family photos: Any of these looks would look fantastic against a wintery backdrop, pine forest, a natural light studio, the Great Saltair just to name a few locations. Don’t be afraid to style your family in brighter colors this winter. Pastels still pop against a drab wintery landscape.
Next let’s move on to some past clients of mine that I think did so well at choosing outfits for their winter or fall family photo session. I hope this outfit inspirations will help you choose clothes that not only go with the vibe of your family, but you may be surprised to find that you have everything you need to create some amazing family photos right in your closet.
I’ll start with a timeless combination that never goes out of style for the holiday season – classic black and green. This neutral ensemble exudes sophistication, featuring velvet dresses, suit, sweaters. This family kept things simple and classy for their Holiday mini session last year. These outfits could be perfect for both indoor and outdoor sessions, this ensemble is a surefire way to capture the essence of winter without sacrificing style.
For those who don’t want the hassle of a dress, try the combination of neutral tan, rich burgundy, and a pop of plaid this winter. This mom did such a great job standing out in her all boy family without being too flashy. I know dresses aren’t for everyone and I love how these outfits went together while keeping everyone warm.
Another classic and cozy option involves blending light beige, tan, and black in a laid-back yet classy manner. The addition of a dress and leather jacket with a fedora hat for the mama adds a touch of sophistication that complements the winter scene beautifully. These neutral colors create a cohesive and timeless look that works seamlessly against the winter backdrop.
For families prioritizing comfort without compromising style, opt for cozy and neutral ensembles. Beanies, sweaters, jeans, and Ugg slippers come together in a warm and colorful palette, creating a casual yet stylish look. I loved the incorporation of gloves, hats and cozy looking sweaters for this family’s mini session. You can’t tell but it was particularly cold during our session and these little girls stayed so warm so they were giving me the best smiles!
Layers will be your best friend if you’re wanting style and warmth during your session. Think blazers, sweaters, cardigans, knee high socks, tights. All of these will keep everyone warm and happy while they look adorable and chic.
Some day’s aren’t so bad here in Utah but other day’s you wish you never left the house. If you’ve got a family photography session up in a canyon you’ll want to keep those little ones warm. I loved that this family had their kids in mind and kept everyone’s cozy accessories shine for their family photos.
Embrace the holiday spirit with Christmas red in your winter family photoshoot wardrobe. The rich red dress paired with neutral or green pieces creates a wintery feel, especially against the backdrop of pine trees. Coordinating with classic pieces in neutral colors ensures a balanced and festive look for the entire family.
Did this help?? I’d love to know what your thoughts are in the comments! Do you shy away from getting family pictures taken because of the cold? Or are you inspired by your upcoming family session? I want to know it all!
